Waiheke Artists & Art Galleries
Waiheke is currently home to over 100 working artists. Pre-eminent New Zealand sculptor Denis O'Connor came to Waiheke 40 years ago and gathered around him a number of like minded painters, potters, and glass makers who were inspired by the Island's dramatic beauty and found inspiration here for their work.
Today Waiheke boasts a truly international mix of artists who regularly participate in the island’s art programmes and festivals.
It also has a strong group of indigenous local artists who are predominantly engaged in the carving of stone, wood and Pounamu (greenstone) as well as traditional flax weaving.
The role of the Waiheke Community Art Gallery is to profile the work of Waiheke artists alongside other New Zealand artists in a programme of exhibitions which change monthly.
Walk into the Gallery and prepare to be dazzled! You will experience diverse and inspiring artwork of national and international significance that you would never expect to find on a small island.
The gallery also plays host to New Zealand's most exciting outdoor sculpture exhibition, Headland Sculpture on the Gulf, which every two years sees up to 40 sculptures installed for a 3 week period on the spectacular Matiatia walkway. Some of its other arts programmes include the Waiheke Artist in Residence, the Walker and Hall Waiheke Art Award, the Small Sculpture Prize, and the Waiheke Winter Arts Festival.
